Dennis Salo

March 12, 1944 — February 24, 2020

Dennis L Salo passed away peacefully after fighting heart disease for the past 16 years on February 24, 2020 with his wife by his side.

Dennis was born in Detroit, Michigan to Matt and Wilma Salo who preceded him in death.  During his youth, he was active in track and hockey at Sault Public Schools in Sault Ste Marie, MI where the family had moved shortly after his birth.

In the summer of 1961, he met the everlasting love of his life, Trudy, at Kinross Lake.  They were married four years later and set out on the adventure of a lifetime that would take them to all 50 states and 6 continents.

After completing his degree from Western Michigan University, Dennis attended Naval Officer Candidate School after earning his MBA at the University of New Mexico.  After completing OCS, he and his wife moved to Athens, Georgia so that he could attend Naval Supply Corp School.  From there he volunteered for submarine duty that would take them to Connecticut.  He served on the nuclear attack submarine USS Pargo SSN650.

Following his career in the Navy, retiring as Lieutenant , Dennis worked his way up through various positions and companies that took him and his family to four different states.  When a viral infection to his heart caused Dennis to retire early, he was a Senior Information Technology Director specializing in department turn around and installation of Enterprise Resource Planning software.

Dennis was very close to his two children, Scott and Carrie.  He spent many years coaching their softball, soccer and hockey teams.  He loved to watch his grandchildren play hockey.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 53 years, Trudy (Baker), son Scott (Mary Alice), 2 grandchildren, Dennis and Dawn all of Kentwood Michigan, and his daughter, Carrie of Sharonville, Ohio, his brother and sister in law Steve and Judy Baker of Ashtabula, Ohio and many cousins.

He was 32nd degree Mason with the Samaria Lodge in Samaria, MI.

Per his request, there will be no service or funeral.  He will be interred with full military honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial donations to LSSU Fund, Lake Superior State University (650 W. Easterday Ave, Sault Ste Marie, MI 49783).
